Winter Travel Tips for DIY Travelers:  

1. Fly non-stop - it can be more costly; however if you can fly non-stop, do so in the wintertime. 

2. This tip surprises many travelers -Pick connecting airports carefully. Remember that El Niños shift the mid-winter storms south. Also, in fall and spring, it is smarter to choose your connections through southern airports  to avoid snow delays.

3. Most of the time It's best to fly early in the day departing and or arriving on a Tuesdays or Thursdays.

Weather challenges in a airport trigger delays throughout the system so fly early in the day. The earlier you fly, fewer of these cascading delays will hit you. Traveling on Tuesday and Thursday often have good ticket prices. 

4.  In winter months de-icing can make your flight depart one to two hours late. However; arrive on time at the airport. Know and review your airlines flight delays and cancellations. Knowing your airlines policy for delays and cancellations can mean credits and / or refunds for you. Whether driving to the airport, hotel, or destination, add an extra hour in the winter months. Would you spend extra time reading in an airport or trying to book a new flight? Just do it! You'll save yourself unnecessary unprepared planing for what pops up n bad weather days .

5. Check in 24 hours ahead and don't wait. Bad weather and travelers on canceled flights trying to get new flights means planes can be overbooked. If you have assigned seats and check in by computer 24 hours early, you have less risk of being bumped. 

6. Get updated on your travel plans. From Twitter (or Facebook) apps  follow your airline 2 or 3 days before the flight. If you see flights are starting to be canceled due to weather, then your flight is at higher risk. The earlier you learn of a cancelled flight, the more likely you can get re-booked.
